Deed of manumission dated September 15, 1841 by Eliza L. Dorsey of the Howard District of Anne Arundel County, Maryland for her Negro and mulatto slaves named Comfort and her son Samuel, Rebecca, Mary Elizabeth, Samuel, James, and Sarah. Witnessed by Hezekiah and John W. Linthicum and by Justice of the Peace Jas. (James) Treakle and recorded by the late clerk Jno. L. (John L.) Moore and examined by the present district clerk E. P. (Edwin Parsons) Hayden, the document identifies the slaves and when they are to be granted their freedom: Comfort age about 25 years and her son Samuel age about 1 year, to be set free immediately; Rebecca age about 26 years, to be set free immediately; Mary Elizabeth age about 8 years, to be set free February 20, 1858; Samuel age 7, to be set free September 3, 1862; and James age about 3 years and Sarah age about 1 year, to be set free immediately. (Editor's note: During this time period, Howard County was known as the Howard District of Anne Arundel County. Howard County was officially designated a county in 1851.)
