Description
Bill of sale dated September 4, 1846 for a Negro slave named Alexander sold by Joshua Hood of the Howard District of Anne Arundel County to Warner Gaither of Carroll County. The sale is in the amount of $70. Witnessed by Justice of the Peace Howes Goldsborough on September 4 and recorded by district clerk Wm. L. (William L.) Moore on September 15, the document identifies Alexander as a Negro boy born March 10, 1841 (now age 5 years) and is to remain in service until he reaches age 25 years, i.e., March 10, 1866 "by virtue of a deed of manumission executed by the Revd [Reverend] John Pitts the former owner of Eliza[,] Alex[ander]'s mother, in the year 1813 and recorded in Frederick County Court".
