Anderson, Isaac C Perry, Erasmus

Description

Bill of sale dated January 3, 1849 for a female Negro slave named Hamite sold by Isaac C. Anderson of the Howard District of Anne Arundel County, Maryland to Erasmus Perry of Montgomery County, Maryland. The sale is in the amount of $200. Witnessed by Justice of the Peace Walter Dorsey on January 3 and recorded by district clerk E. P. (Edwin Parsons) Hayden on January 9, the document indicates that 14-year-old Hamite is to serve Erasmus Perry or his heirs until February 1, 1862 when she turns 30 years of age. The document references a previous bill of sale. To view a document of one of the subsequent sales of Hamite, see item hcbh114, "Bill of Sale from Erasmus Perry to Hester Ann Purvey". (Editor's note: During this time period, Howard County was known as the Howard District of Anne Arundel County. Howard County was officially designated a county in 1851. Why the discrepancy between Hamite's age and her term of service is unclear.)
