Calhoun, Henry

Description

Deed of manumission dated July 5, 1842 by Henry Calhoun of the Howard District of Anne Arundel County, Maryland, a colored man, for his slave named Mary Calhoun and her 8 children. Witnessed by N. H. Ellicott and Justice of the Peace Jas. (James) Martin and recorded by late district clerk Jno. L. (John L.) Moore, the document grants freedom to Mary Calhoun immediately and to her eight children on specific dates: Nancy Elizabeth on March 28, 1845; Martha Rebecca on September 3, 1846; Charles Westley on September 18, 1853; Robert Alexander on July 18, 1855; Henry on February 7, 1857; Amos on September 14, 1858; John on August 10, 1860; and James Thomas on June 2, 1862. (Editor's note: During this time period, Howard County was known as the Howard District of Anne Arundel County. Howard County was officially designated a county in 1851. Why the last page of the document ends abruptly without the clerk's signature is not known. Blank page 3 was not scanned and thus is not included.)
