Anderson, Isaac C

Description

Deed of manumission dated July 15, 1845 by Isaac C. Anderson of the Howard District of Anne Arundel County, Maryland for his Negro slave named Robert Hopkins. The deed grants Hopkins, age 27 years, his freedom that same day. Witnessed by Daniel Butler and Justice of the Peace Jacob Bradenbaugh, the deed refers to a previous suit in which Robert Hopkins petitioned for his freedom from John Cole of Anne Arundel County, Maryland. The suit was resolved when Isaac C. Anderson agreed to pay a sum of money to John Cole, with the condition that Robert Hopkins would serve him (Anderson) for a certain number of years before being set free. (Editor's note: During this time period, Howard County was known as the Howard District of Anne Arundel County. Howard County was officially designated a county in 1851. The recorder of the deed is believed to be John L. Moore, who was the clerk for the Howard District of Anne Arundel County during this time. Blank page 3 was not scanned and thus is not included.)
