Warfield, Sarah G

Description

Deed of manumission dated December 31, 1842 by Sarah G. Warfield of the Howard District of Anne Arundel County, Maryland for her Negro slave named James France. Witnessed by Reuben Warfield and Justice of the Peace Nichs. D. (Nicholas D.) Warfield of Bela on December 31, 1842 and recorded by district clerk Jno. L. (John L.) Moore on January 5, 1843, the document identifies James France as age 43 years. (Editor's note: During this time period, Howard County was known as the Howard District of Anne Arundel County. Howard County was officially designated a county in 1851. During this time also, using the first initial of the first name or first name of the father, as in Nicholas D. Warfield "of Bela", was common practice if there were other persons with the same name, especially in various generations of the same family. Thus this Nicholas Warfield is "of Bela", i.e., the son of Bela Warfield.)
