Scarlet, Don

Description

Responding to the call for information, Scarlet reports the camp is a most pleasant place to live, the medical training is interesting and there are no inconveniences. "We on the anti-war side of the fence have not been made to undergo any sort of pressure -- except for bond-buying, and somehow just the mention of one's CO standing seems to check their insistence in the matter of patriotic expenditures!" Surrounded by interesting people, none of whom are hostile. "There are good, honest men living in prison today -- or trying to live -- with the hatred & bitterness of many, many people hanging over their heads. I'm in a uniform -- therefore the whole country literally bows before me! Yes, I speak constantly for the Negro down here, and for the American of Japanese descent - and for Christ's 'other cheek' teachings -- but I am the first to admit that the good I am doing (for what I know to be true and worth believing in!) is nil compared to the good that those others are doing -- by allowing their whole lives and beings to be shaken and torn up by the roots."
