Two-page letter from students regarding a fast coordinated by Students United for Racial Equality (SURE) begun on Ash Wednesday to call Marquette administrators to action surrounding the advice and directives of the Ver. Rev. Pedro Arrupe, General of the Society of Jesus.We, the undersigned students, have begun this past Ash Wednesday, a Lenten fast of bread, water and tea. This fast is coordinated by Marquette Students United for Racial Equality. We direct this statement to Father Raynor, University President, and to other administrative policy-makers, calling on then to heed the advice and directives set down by the Very Rev. Pedro Arrupe, General of the Society of Jesus, in his open letter to the American Jesuits. In his letter, he pointed out: "It is embarrassing to note that, up to the present, some of our institutions have effected what seems to be little more than token integration of the Negro. It is salutary for us to reflect upon these facts.
