Two newspaper articles, one from the Milwaukee Journal, addressing the activities of SURE and the Young Democrats.Students At MU In Rights Bid, A small group of 20 Marquette university students calling for a university stand on civil rights gathered Monday to give Father John P. Raynor, the president, a petition signed by 300 persons. The group found he was not in. About 37 members of the Students United for Racial Equality (SURE) began a Lenten fast Feb. 28 to call attention to their please. The bread and tea fast will continue until Apr. 5, the start of Easter vacation. The 300 signers of the sympathy petitions pledged to fast on one Monday during Lent to support the cause. But only a few showed up for the March to Raynor’s office. Gregory Stanford, 21, of 846 N. 14th st., the general coordinator of SURE, will keep the petition until it can be presented to Raynor sometime next week.
