Paid advertisement from the November 30, 1966 issue of the Marquette Tribune issuing a challenge from Students United for Racial Equality (SURE) to Marquette University to dare to be Christian.SURE Challenges MARQUETTE UNIVERSITY To Dare To Be CHRISTIAN Our integrity as a Christian University is at stake. We have the option of either taking a prophetic stand of Christian involvement, or of defending compromising posture with complacent irrelevancies and providing that our ghetto Catholicism fosters a middle class morality and a blindness to pressing social issues when they conflict with our convenience, our pocket book, and our pleasure. We do not see how any student can attend the Tip-Off dance at the Eagle’s Club a) if he is a Christian, b) if he understands the social implications of his actions. We do not pretend to judge the motives of those who do not attend. But it is clear to us that, if a student does attend the dance, one of these three elements is lacking. For those of us who are deeply involved in the problems of Milwaukee’s inner core, and who can therefore speak from personal experience, it is clear that grave harm is being done to the Negro community in the
