Transcript of the oral history interview with Alva Lorena Smith Marcus, an African-American woman who grew up in the U Street Corridor neighborhood. She recounts how growing up, her father owned or managed several businesses along U Street, drove a cab, and ran messages for the FBI. She describes many experiences of community, childhood and young adulthood, as well as her time as a student at Howard University.
