Deed of manumission dated May 9, 1864 by William Hughes of Howard County for his Negro slave named Wm. H. (William H.) Jones. Witnessed by Charles W. White and Justice of the Peace S. Sykes on May 9, 1864 and recorded by Howard County clerk W. W. Watkins on May 10, 1864, the document grants William H. Jones his freedom to commence from December 31, 1863, the date of his enlistment in the 19th Regiment of Colored Troops in the service of the United States. Handwritten on the five-cent stamp with George Washington's portrait on front is S. Sykes May 10th, 1864.
