Bill of sale date October 26, 1858 for a Negro slave named Sophia Burgess sold by John Orem to John M. Warfield, both of Howard County, Maryland. The sale is in the amount of $125. Witnessed by Wm. (William) Cushen and Justice of the Peace Reuben Warfield on October 26 and recorded by Howard County clerk W. W. Watkins on November 19, the document identifies Sophia Burgess by name only; it does, however, set her term of service to expire on September 15, 1863, when she is to be set free.
