(Email sent to academic colleagues in Japan engaged in joint EU-US-Asian higher education reform projects) It is very difficult to write the words "good morning" to all of you after the results of the U.S. election last night.  I -- and most of my colleagues -- are filled with such a sense of sadness, not simply over the voting but more importantly over the state of our countrymen. The intensity of hate, anger, and fear among so many millions of Americans must run far deeper than I ever wanted to believe possible. The only small (but electorally meaningless) piece of solitude I take from last night is that Hillary Clinton has a slight lead in the popular vote (of 200,000 ballots). Hopefully, that is a slender indicator that change will eventually come again. Hopefully. Perhaps the biggest surprise for many of us today has been how empty our email boxes have been. For the first time in several weeks, most of us in the department did not receive any requests for assistance or
