Description
Harvey Gantt delivers a campaign speech to children and adults at Belmont Junior High School. Gantt discusses his plan to restore the American Dream. He talks about his background (wanting to be an architect, going to Clemson and MIT, becoming an architect); his desire to give back to the community; becoming involved in politics, running for office and serving as mayor. Gantt discusses education, including preparing for the future through education and job training; tax deductions for college, and student loans and grants. He criticizes his opponent, Jesse Helms, for being against federal involvement in education. Gantt expresses concern about citizens believing that their vote doesn't count and says he wants kids to be active in politics. Concludes with a question and answer session, with topics including school uniforms, welfare, campaign financing, and Helms's attack ads.
