Description

Photograph of the south side of the 1000 block Ashland Avenue between Ensor and Aisquith Streets in Baltimore, Maryland. These mostly two-story brick row houses are small and in poor repair. On the nearest corner, a Caucasian man is standing in front of the Ashland Lunch Room, which has a sign for Coca-Cola on its wall. A few doors away is John's Pool Parlor, with an African American man sitting on the door step. On the front steps of the house next to the parlor are four African American men sitting and talking. Near the curb in front of them is a loaded handcart with a hand-painted sign that reads, "Rags & Metal." Tracks are embedded in the roadway, and electric lines for streetcars are suspended above the street.
