He said he was going to whip the champion of the United States. And they told him where to find him, and he went to the house, asked the husband (?) about him, and she said, "He's back in the back of the house cutting wood." And he went back there and found a big nigger cutting wood. He come back and he said, "That's not your husband, is it?" And she said, "Yes." He said, "Why, a. fine-looking woman like you marry a nigger?" She said, "Yes, but my father said my sister had done a heap worse than that." He said, "How could she a-done that?" She said, "She married a member of the Arkansas Legislature." Funding for digitization provided by the Arkansas Humanities Council and the Happy Hollow Foundation.
