Description

Coll. by Told by Mrs. Theresa Warren M.C. Parler Brinkley, Ark. November 14, 1953 Reel 167 Item 7 My Mother used to tell us this when we were children: Once upon a time a couple of slaves stole some hickory nuts, from the master. So they went down to the bank to count these hick-ory nuts, to divide them among the three of them. The master heard the talk down there, and he was crippled, he had rheumatism. So he asked one of the slaves to take him down there where it was... So this Negro took him on his shoulder and took him down these ...He said "No no, I can't go down dere, Massa, cause de Devil and de Lawd are out dere count in out sould." And it was like this: They couldn't divide, they didn't know anything about mathematics, so they'd say "Wunh fuh you, wunh fuh me an' wunh fuh Jack, wunh fuh me, wunh fuh you, an' wunh fuh Jack." And so the master told him "You take me down there. " And they went down there, and he took him down there on his shoulder, he couldn't walk because he had rheumayism,. Say "Wunh fuh you an' wunh fuh me an' wunh fuh Jack." And the Negro threw the master and flew. Funding for digitization provided by the Arkansas Humanities Council and the Happy Hollow Foundation.
