May 16, 1938 Letter of support sent to President Dammann following decision to admit African American student "Dear Mother Dammann, I wish to thank you for your kind invitation to the blessing of Mary Moran Memorial Hall on Wednesday, the eighteenth of May. Unfortunately, I shall be working on Wednesday afternoon and we are so busy at present that I cannot take an afternoon off. May I take this opportunity to tell you how proud I am of Manhattanville’s admitting a negro student for is (sic) the practical working-out, the climax, of the splendid interracial forums at the college. Most of us who were fortunate enough to be in the College at the time of the discussions and to take part in them, grew naturally to understand and to accept this truly social Catholicism which will not tolerate unjust racial discrimination. More members of the alumnae who fear for loss of ‘social prestige’ for the College and for the students have, to me, failed to grasp the sum and substance of their Catholic College education where their concept of all that ‘social’ implies is so superficial and limited. One must wonder their sense of values and their philosophy of life when they cannot realize that this one negro freshman is a great glory to Manhattanville than all the worldly success of former students.
