Description

Letter of protest sent to President Dammann following decision to admit African American student: "Dear Madam; I am deeply shocked to learn that Manhattanville has accepted a coloured girl as a Freshman for next year. I feel that this is a very serious mistake. It will not only discourage Catholic people from sending their daughters to the Sacred Heart College, but will also put the convent in a very unflattering light to the public at large. It seems to me that there are plenty of fine schools for coloured people and that this young woman would find herself happier and more congenial in a school where she was not an individual but one of the school. It is not only unfair to the students at the college now but it is unfair to the coloured girl besides, how can she be accepted as a social equal? I am convinced that the religious have made a grave error taking this step. This girl may be one of the Flock but Christian charity and wisdom seems to advise against including her in a groups where she is wholly unsuited and unqualified Very truly yours,
