Description
A black and white photograph of the interior of the Printing Office in the Knowles Industrial Building at Atlanta University. The photograph shows students working with the various printing equipment and machinary used in the printing workshop. The Knowles Industrial Building was built in 1884 for the use of the mechanical department. The building included carpenter's benches, wood-turning lathes, a forge room, and a room for mechanical drawing. Atlanta University opened on October 13, 1869. The University offered training for African American students of all ages including kindergarten, grade school, normal, industrial, academy and college.
