Description

A black and white photograph of students working in the Forge Room in the Knowles Industrial Building at Atlanta University. The Forge room includes several coal forges, wheelbarrows full of coal, and anvils. The Knowles Industrial Building was built in 1884 for the use of the mechanical department. The building included carpenter's benches, wood-turning lathes, a forge room, and a room for mechanical drawing. Atlanta University opened on October 13, 1869. The University offered training for African American students of all ages including kindergarten, grade school, normal industrial, academy and college.
