Description

A black and white photograph of Atlanta University from the west side of campus. The photo includes South Hall, Stone Hall, North Hall, the Carnegie Library, Oglethorpe Practice School, and the Knowles Industrial Building. Built in 1870, South Hall provided space for a mens dormitory, classrooms, and religious services. South Hall was the second building on the new fifty acre Atlanta University campus, located on the west side of downtown Atlanta. Built in 1882, Stone Hall contaied the chapel, lecture rooms, laboratories, and offices. Completed in 1869, North Hall was the first building constructed for the new Atlanta University. When first completed it provided dormitory rooms for both men and women students as well as providing classroom space. The Knowles Industrial Building was built in 1884 for the use of the mechanical department. The building included carpenter's benches, wood-turning lathes, a forge room, and a room for mechanical drawing. Atlanta University opened on October 13, 1869. The University offered training for African American students of all ages including kindergarten, grade school, normal industrial, academy and college.
