Description

Catherine P. Blaine writes to her family to discuss the current state of life in Washington Territory. She notes her own illness has kept her from doing household chores. She writes that she has hired a Native American woman to do her wash but complains that the she has not done the work well. Catherine notes the gradual change to spring weather including the appearance of leaves on some deciduous trees and the growth of wild flowers. Of note, Catherine discusses recent legislative active including the passage of a law that allows half-white, half-Native American citizens to vote. Catherine complains that this "half-breed" law is shameful and feels angry that such individuals are allowed to vote while white women cannot. She remarks that Seattle is growing and believes that investment in the town would be a smart decision.
