Description

This work was part of "A Seat at the Table," which opened on June 12, 2019 at the Edward M. Kennedy Institute for the United States Senate.Artist: Janine Harper. Permission from the Edward M. Kennedy Institute for the United States Senate.Janine Harper [Creator]Imagery from Congresswoman Barbara Lee’s life is used in the piece. Viewers can see the bear from the California state flag and a black panther from the political group the Black Panthers, to which she belonged. These images form a pattern that mixes African inspirations with very American symbols, reflecting the dichotomy experienced by African Americans. Artist Janine Harper hopes the symbolism gives us a framework of understanding that guides us into conversations for the future.
