Description
Chocho vessel created by the Borana people of Ethiopia.The Borana are a pastoral people who live in southern Ethiopia. Vessels like this one are called chocho. They are used to store and serve milk to guests at special occasions, such as weddings. For the Borana, milk is a staple food, and it has spiritual value as a symbol of fertility. The cowrie shells used to decorate this chocho symbolize fertility, wealth, and protection.Anonymous gift to the Tubman African American Museum.
