Mask created by the Dan people of Liberia.Dan masks are the personification of spiritual beings that inhabit the deep forests. The form of each mask is unique and is first revealed to the wearer in a dream. Then, under the direction of the Men's Society, a complete masquerade costume is made to represent the spirit being. Each spirit being is unique in characteristics and personality. The wearer takes on all of the spirit beings characteristics when wearing the masquerade costume.Gift of Al and Dana Henderson to the Tubman African American Museum.
