Description

Edward DeField was born in 1918 near the small farming community of Armour, Missouri. His parents were Edward David Ward DeField and Etna H. DeField. As a Democrat, he served as the Assessor of Mississippi County for fifty-five years, continuously elected beginning in 1940. Although Mr. DeField was not driven to public service as many officeholders proclaim to be, political activity is a family legacy. His father was the Mississippi County Assessor from 1929 to 1937, and his younger brother Fred served the 160th district in the Missouri House of Representatives for five terms beginning in 1969.The interview took place in Mr. DeFields Charleston home. Upon my arrival, it was apparent that he had taken great pains to prepare himself for our meeting. Mr. DeField had a large legal notepad filled with events which he wished to be sure were documented, much of which had to do with the history of Mississippi County. During the course of our conversation it became apparent that for Mr. DeField ones personal and public life were inextricably linked.Oral History Program The State Historical Society of Missouri © 2000 Collection C3929 Politics in Missouri a.c. 271-273 An Interview with Edward DeField at his home in Charleston, Missouri 10 May 2000 interviewed by N.
