The Caribbean Writers Summer Institute, hosted by the University of Miami English Department, was held for five weeks during the summer in Miami, Florida, from 1991 through 1996. Each year the program arranged public readings and interviews at a variety of locations in Miami.Miami Gardens (Fla.)The program is introduced by an unidentified woman, who discusses the significance of having Caribbean writers at this event. The program, the first in a series of readings, is sponsored by the English Department of the University of Miami, the Caribbean African American Studies Program, the North South Graduate School of International Studies, and the James Mitchell Endowment Fund. Brother Jomo and Brother Ali perform a drum piece. They continue to provide musical accompaniment throughout the readings. Robert Antoni introduces Kamau Brathwaite. Brathwaite reads a poem by Derek Walcott. Brother Jomo and Brother Ali provide musical accompaniment. Brathwaite welcomes the audience and performs his rendition of Derek Walcott's poem, which uses the names of Caribbean islands. He then reads some of his own jazz poems. Cynthia James, a teacher and writer from Trinidad, reads “Airi [?], My Love,” a poem about a beach, and a poem about the dry season in Trinidad. James then reads three poems that reflect the hard times in Trinidad: “Bamboo Flowering,” “Hurricane,” “Coward Eye [?],” followed by two poems about current events: “What They Do Not Know” and “The Freeing of Nelson.” Eileen Marshall, Jamaican teacher and librarian, reads "The Little Pig Who Thought He Was a Kitten" [the recording...
