View of students of the Atlanta Medical College in the dissecting room posing around a cadaver on a table with a banner that reads "He lived for others, he died for us, 1911" in Atlanta, Georgia.The Georgia General Assembly granted a charter for Atlanta Medical College in 1854. Students attended the first session the following year, and in 1859, the first building was erected at Butler and Armstrong streets near what is now Grady Memorial Hospital. In 1898, Atlanta Medical College joined with the Southern Medical College (founded in 1878) to form the Atlanta College of Physicians and Surgeons which later merged with Atlanta School of Medicine under the historic name Atlanta Medical College. In 1915, this school became the Emory University School of Medicine.
