Description

Herman A. Johnson was born on December 19, 1916. As a Democrat, he served for two consecutive terms in the Missouri House of Representatives, elected in 1968 and 1970. For his most recent biographic entry, see the Official Manual of the State of Missouri, 1970-1971. Mr. Johnson has been involved in numerous business and civic activities in Missouri and the Kansas City area prior to, following, and outside of his political career. He is former president of the NAACP, and continues to operate the Herman Johnson Company specializing in real estate, insurance, and property appraisal. For an article about Mr. Johnsons endeavors, see the Kansas City Star Magazine, January 15, 1995.I met Mr. Johnson at his office in Kansas City, where I began by photographing the rare artifact of the partial Missouri mule, the symbol of the ROSD. Then we began the recording session, and paused in the taping for one long interval so that Mr. Johnson could take a conference call. During that time I looked at some of the many plaques, awards, and other mementos on his office walls, including a photograph of Mr. Johnson with Danny Glover. The session was quite amiable, though incomplete, by both our reckonings. So fortunately we were able to supplement the initial recording with an additional interview by telephone a few days later. The following transcript reflects all this material.Oral History Program The State Historical Society of Missouri © 1998 Collection C3929 Politics in Missouri a.c. 214-216 An Interview with Herman A....
