Beatty, John Reed

Description

In this letter dated August 25, 1861, John Reed Beatty writes to Laura E. Maxfield, known as Libbie. He describes visitors to Fort Snelling and urges Maxfield to visit him there. He states that "a negro is not the equal of a white man" in response to a discussion Maxfield had with a Mr. Conrad. Beatty and Maxfield were married in 1864.
