Movie title raises eyebrows in Southport

SOUTHPORT - City aldermen weren't too thrilled this week when they learned Southport will be the locale for a movie called Amos & Andrew. The movie title closely resembles the old Amos 'n Andy comedy, which some say stereotyped blacks as ignorant, happy-go-lucky people. Amos & Andrew, producers say, is a social attire about a black playwright mistaken for a burglar while moving a stereo into his new home. Publicist Hope Miller in New York said the similarity in the titles is intentional, because the feature film explores in a humorous way how times have changed. Amos 'n Andy once thought funny, is considered offensive today. "While I am in disagreement over the title," Alderman Nelson Adams said, "I realize these people will be coming to our fine community spending money." The aldermen also learned that the production company wants to put a temporary cover over the name Southport on the city's water tower. The city just paid $32,000 to have the tower painted blue and white. City Manager Rob Hites said the drape won't harm the paint job. The movie, which takes place on Fire Island, includes scenes where a man jumps out of a window and a high-speed chase, which will be filmed in the 100 block of Moore Street. The majority of the movie is being shot in a Wilmington sound studio. Crews will begin filming in Southport April 30. The film stars Samuel L.
