The film industry often elevates normal flesh-and-blood to the status of gods. But it doesn't hold a candle to God. Shirley MacLaine found that out Jan. 12 when she visited St. James Parish at Third and Market streets and thought the beautiful sanctuary would be perfect for a scene in her upcoming movie Bruno. Upon her request to use the church interior, the St. James Vestry met and agreed there could be no exceptions to their long-standing rule that the church not be used for filming. ''We are directed to avoid creating any stumbling blocks to worship,'' said Rev. Charlie VonRosenberg in the St. James church bulletin, The Grapevine. St. James still supports the film industry and, in fact, plans remain to shoot scenes from Bruno in the Parish's fellowship hall and in one of its offices. Local frontrunners for the church interior scene are Grace United Methodist Church and St. Paul's Episcopal. The Duke Chapel in Durham is under consideration. Local couple H. Walter Knox and Constance Henley Knox have created an hour long documentary that will air on the History Channel three times in the next nine days. Wilmington Through the Eyes of Louis T. Moore - Caretaker of Cape Fear History and Legend airs at 6 a.m. and 9 a.m. Monday and 8 a.m. Feb. 1.
