Description
Letter from Samuel Cowles in Hartford, Connecticut, to his sister Charlotte Cowles in Farmington, Connecticut. The depository where the Charter Oak newspaper would be published had opened, with numerous people visiting and buying publications. There had been passersby who made threatening remarks, and overnight someone spattered mud onto the new sign, the doors and window shutters in an act of vandalism.
