Cleveland writes to Maria Weston Chapman in regards to confessing that she has "neither comprehension nor consequently sympathy in the cause which so inspires your devotion; yet believe me, I look upon a life of such consistent energy & perseverance as your own with real interest." For this reason she cannot make a donation.
