Description
Holograph, signed.Title devised by cataloger.Nathaniel B. Borden writes to Maria Weston Chapman in regards to the assertion that abolitionists are increasing in numbers and that the slaveholders realize it. The reports of the secretaries of the navy and war departments accompanying the president's message ask for increased protection for that part of the country, which is weak because of its "peculiar institutions." He sends Maria $10 to be used "at your own discretion in promoting...emancipation." He gives in detail an account of the votes taken in Congress upon the question of revising rules of the past Congress, counting the votes by "free states" and by parties.
