Description

In 1930, two junior high schools were opened by the Middletown school system - McKinley and Roosevelt. McKinley Junior High School was located along South Verity Parkway at Lincoln Street. When opened, these two building were some of the finest in the state. They contained gymnasiums, cafeterias, libraries, economic labs, science labs, and industrial arts facilities. The auditoriums could seat six hundred people each, and had beautifully stenciled beams and wall panels. The chandeliers were Tiffany glass, and the projection booth was furnished with the latest equipment. The school library contained built-in bookshelves, oak furniture and intricately stenciled beams. The first libraries in Middletown schools were in McKinley and Roosevelt Junior High Schools. Additions were made in 1959 and 1967. McKinley Junior High School became a middle school in 1969, and was closed in the spring of 1979. In the fall of 1981, it reopened as an elementary school. It was again closed, and in 2004 was demolished. In the fall of 2006, Rosa Parks Elementary School opened on the site.
