This symposium was co-sponsored by the American Indian Movement, the Department of American Indian Studies at the University of Minnesota, and the Wounded Knee Legal Offense-Defense Committee. The essence of each speaker's remarks is presented in this selection. The speakers include: Indian leader Russell Means, Vernon Bellecourt, Clyde Bellecourt, and Eddie Benton.; Dr. Roger Buffalohead from the University of Minnesota; Angela Davis, Chairperson of the National Alliance to Combat Racism and Political Oppression in America, and attorney Mark Lane, member of the Legal Offense-Defense Committee of Wounded Knee. The symposium offered interested persons a chance to come together to learn the facts about Wounded Knee, discuss the issues, and offer mutual encouragement and support. The AIM anthem is played. Speakers revieew the history and purpose of AIM, which was founded in Minneapolis in July 1968. Vernon Bellecourt offers an overview of the oppression of Indians in U.S. History.Mark Lane reviews the entire Wounded Knee Incident in detail. He strongly defends the actions of AIM leaders and bitterly criticizes the actions of the government and the news media. Speakers stress the fact that the American Indian Movement has become a spiritual movement as well as a political force.
