The Michigan Capitol, completed in 1879 in Lansing. According to its marker placed by the state historical commission, it is recognized "for establishing the domed capitol as an American icon and for launching the national career of its architect, Elijah E. Myers of Detroit." The statue in front of the building depicts Austin Blair, a fierce opponent of slavery who was Michigan's governor during the American Civil War of the 1860s. The work of Massachusetts sculptor Edward Clark Potter, the statue was erected in 1898
