A Foxy Old Mayor of Montenegro. When Dr. Joseph F. Jaros of Chicago, medical director of the American Red Cross unit in Montenegro (left) saved his Montenegrin companion's son and daughter from Typhoid fever, the venerable old fellow attempted to pay for the American's services. When it was refused he presented the American doctor with a live fox, caught by himself, as a token of his appreciation. The aged man has seen eighty summers, is mayor of his mountain village and is the personification of Montenegrin dignity as his pose shows

The ducks swam the entire distance, as there was no room in the boat. They are just going ashore to parade up the main street to the market. The ruins of an old Venetian bridge can be seen in the left background while at the right the week's wash is out to dry. The weekly market day in Ryeka has a double meaning to Albanians peasants now. A Marvelous Transformation. A series of three pictures illustrating the "before and after" periods of American Red Cross clothing distribution in Montenegro. The Raggedest Man in Montenegro. With clothes that were patched, darned and held together by bits of twine, shedding ravelings at almost every step, this man wandered into the market place at Podgoritza with a goat which he spent four years in a mountain cave during the Austrian occupation of the country with the goat as his only companion. With the money secured from its sale he set out to buy some clothes but could find no garment that could be bought at that price. He was picked up by Lieut. Col. H.L. Fairclough of Leland Stanford University, director of the American Red Cross work in Montenegro, as the raggedest of all ragged men in the country, and taken to the Red Cross relief station

The school at Tuzi, Montenegro that was about to be closed because of the destitute condition of the children was kept open by the timely arrival of American Red Cross supplies. Now an American flag is a permanent fixture in the school house. These children were so ragged and naked that many of them could not attend. The Red Cross sent enough clothing to outfit each child and gave aid to the children's families

At the Junior Red Cross of America home for destitute orphans in Podgoritza these Montenegrin war waifs knew the whole hearted generosity of American school children, and their desire to soften their tired lives with comforting gifts and sympathy. Until now, they have known little but hunger and drifting unclad from place to place. Now they are having lessons in the orphanage and learning to spin and weave and perform numberous useful tasks. Children of this backward country have suffered unbelievably during and since the war. Education was practically unknown here, and what few schools existed before the war, usually under Russian supervision, were demolished or the buildings commandeered for military purposes so that "Junior" aid is striking deep into the roots of their misery in offering them their first educational opportunities

American Food "Welcomest" Thing in Montenegro. Landing a steamer of food at Ragusa, on the Dalmatian coast, bringing American food supplies for the needy of Montenegro. Almost no food is to be had in this section of the Balkans, except that furnished by outside relief organizations, and the people have reached a state of weakness from hunger that is appalling. The American Red Cross has distributed tons of food and clothing in all outlying districts and in the cities. Women and children have been the greatest sufferers, and they were in a state of complete helplessness. What with shortage of men and labor, and prolonged political helplessness, and governmental disturbances, production is at a very low ebb, and consequently the women and children already much weakened from deprivations of every sort, are martyrs

American Hit Undertakers Hard. An undertaker of Podgoritza, Montenegro, on the way to the home of the corpse. There are no hearses so he had to carry the coffin to the house of the dead on his head. Before the American Red Cross arrived in Montenegro, the undertaker business was flourishing. But the establishment of hospitals, dispensaries, mobile medical units and orphanages in the country the Americans have reduced the deathrate greatly. It is customary for the friend of the deceased to gather about the home of the departed one upon the arrival of the undertaker, wail for hours and beat their breast as evidence of their grief. After this the coffin, with the corpses exposed, is carried in relays by the mourners to the cemetery

American Made Smiles. A group of happy Turkish children at Tuzi, Montenegro. The picture was taken at the American Red Cross relief station where hundreds of children are being fed and clothed. Under American influence and food these mountain children are growing into a particularly bright set of boys. The day this photograph was taken they were expecting an unusual event. The Red Cross truck is due with a load of clothes for them-the first they have had in five years. The chap in the center is the only happy one-and his trouble is only temporary, due to the loss of his fez in the scramble to be photographed and have their picture sent to America

American Monopoly in Montenegro. There are only four hospitals in the whole country of Montenegro, and they were established and operated by the American Red Cross. Here is one of the ones at Niksic where a hundred patients can be cared for at a time. The building has been abandoned but it was cleaned and repaired by the Americans, and made into a good hospital. From investigations made by nurses and doctors it is known that half of the population are afflicted with some diseases. Besides giving medical aid to the people, the Americans have sent clothing , and food by the ton into the stricken country. Without this aid thousands would have died this winter

America women who undertook the care of the sick and dying in this distiture [sic] and war ravaged country found not only a pitiful lack of hospitals and equipment but the need for training some of the native women to take up the nursing profession and be able to 'carry' on after Red Cross operations there are discontinued. To this end several nursing classes are regularly conduct under the dire action of expert American nurses

American Repair Balkan Bridge. Many of the bridges of Montenegro were destroyed or wrecked by the retreating Austrians. Through the efforts of the American Red Cross transportation department, many of them have been repaired and maintained in a fairly safe condition, although permanent repairs are a matter to be taken up later by the Serbian government. These temporary repairs have been necessary for the carrying out of the work of the Red Cross, making possible the successful transportation of supplies for relief. The bridge in the photograph was built by a Turkish pasha 500 years ago and is a fine example of thoroughgoing early construction. Although the Austrians placed several heavy charges of dynamite under the arch, the bridge withstood the shock fairly well

Americans Occupy Another Royal Palace. Outside the exotic conservatory in the beautiful grounds of Prince Mirko's palace in Montenegro. The Prince absented himself from this country shortly after King Nicholas went into exile. And when the American Red Cross came to succor the destitute and bind up the wounds of the suffering the people turned ober Mirko's palace to the Americans. The palace was turned into a hospital and the conservatory into a tuberculosis sanitarium. This shows some of the patients outside the entrance with Miss Minnie Parrish, Red Cross nurse of Mankato, Minn., and Captain Chelsea C. Pratt, medical director of the Red Cross Montenegrin Mission, of Dolphas, N.M.
