Warfield, John, of Joshua Waters, Jonathan
Description
Bill of sale dated March 31, 1855 for a Negro slave named Nicholas sold by Jonathan Waters to John Warfield of Joshua, both of Howard County, Maryland. The sale is in the amount of $325. Witnessed by Justice of the Peace J. G. Worthington on March 31 and recorded by Howard County clerk W. H. Worthington on April 10, the document identifies Nicholas as a Negro boy age about 10 years 5 months whose term of service will last until he reaches age 31 years, when according to Howard County records in liber E. P. H. number 2 folio 428 dated November 18, 1852, he will be set free. (Editor's note: During this time, using the first initial of the first name or first name of the father, as in John Warfield "of Joshua", was common practice if there were other persons with the same name, especially in various generations of the same family. Thus this John Warfield is "of Joshua", i.e., the son of Joshua Warfield.)
