Description
During the Civil War, Semple served as a captain of an artillery battery organized in Montgomery (known as Semple's Battery). He was later appointed a major and transferred to Mobile. In the letter he discusses clothing he has recently received and his personal finances, including income, debt, credit, and assets; one of his debts is for the "purchase of Sarah's children" from the estate of a woman in Tennessee. A transcription is included.
