Description

This document is a letter dated April 12, 1812 from Anthony Porter to David B. Mitchell (Governor of Georgia, 1809-1813, 1815-1817). Porter reports the receipt of two letters from Brigadier General John Floyd military commander in East Florida which provide details on recent activity in the region. Porter quotes from Floyd's letters, informing Mitchell that troops stationed at Picolata, on the St. John's River opposite St. Augustine, are in danger of attack from the Alachua Indians and possibly British naval forces, as well. Floyd further reports on threats of ambush by "negroes who are in arms with the Spaniards," and troop movements between St. Augustine in Florida and Fernandina on the Georgia/Florida border.Digital image and encoded transcription of an original manuscript, scanned, transcribed and encoded by the Digital Library of Georgia in 2001, as part of GALILEO, funded in part by a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services.
