Description

Document, bill of sale for slave woman named Philis. A typical bill of sale, the above document is a preprinted form with the essential information written in by hand. For the amount of $300, Philis is sold to David L. Maulsby by Eliza Ann Bennett. The reason for the sale is not given. David Lee Maulsby was a grocer at 113 N. High street. In later years he was joined by a partner, Darius Stansbury and their business expanded to wholesale and retail grocery on North street opposite the railroad depot. Maulsby and his family still lived at the High street address. In March of 1853 Maulsby died. By 1860 Philis, listed as Fillis McLean was a servant in the Maulsby household, now headed by David's widow, Margaret. According to the 1860 Federal Census she was listed as a mulatto, born in Maryland, fifty years of age and unable to read or write.
