African American Family Monument

Description

CCNY Architecture Travel Fellows; The African American Family Monument was dedicated in 2002, and stands on River Street. It has an inscription by Maya Angelou, however, the last line in that inscription was not written by Angelou herself. There was a lot of controversy about this line's inclusion on the memorial or not--it reads "Today, we are standing up together, with faith and even some joy." It was meant to soften the tone of Anglelou's actual words about slavery, which were, to some, too harsh.
