Description

Head shot of John A. Moore. John A. Moore (1888-1939) was born in Rock Hill, NC. During his lifetime he worked as an architect, contractor, and carpenter. He worked in DC as an architect in the Supervising Architect's Office in the U.S. Treasury, and had a private architecture practice from about 1912-1917. In 1920 he married Susan Brown and moved to Wilmington, NC where they lived with his in-laws, who ran a popular African American restaurant called the Plaza. Working with his brother Joshua, also a carpenter, they are credited with designing and building the home of Dr. Frank W. Avant on Red Cross Street in 1929. Dr. Avant was the first African American doctor to practice in North Carolina. According to family history, the Moore brothers were responsible for the design and construction of many of the houses in the Forest Hills neighborhood of Wilmington.
