Hazel Marshall was a resident of Toledo in the early 1900s. She was born on December 2, 1902, and graduated from Jessup W. Scott High School. She was the widow of Wilbur Marshall Sr. They were married for 54 years at the time of his death. Mrs. Marshall was one Ohio's most remarkable political volunteers who worked her precinct to help voters cast ballots in Toledo's 14th Ward in all but one election in since 1928. She received many honors for her lifetime of volunteerism, most recently by Ohio Secretary of State Kenneth Blackwell for 74 years of dedicated service to Lucas County. During the Depression, she taught sewing lessons for seven years at the old Frederick Douglass Community Center through the Public Works Administration and later the Work Project Administration. Mrs. Marshall was an active member of All Saints Episcopal Chruch for 91 years. She held offices of past President, Treasurer of the St. Agnes Guild, had memberships in the Altar Guild and choir. In this interview, she shares many of the problems faced by herself and her family due to their race. She also recounts increasing hostility toward African Americans after more families moved north following the world wars. Mrs. Marshall died at the age of 99 on September 6, 2002 in Toledo.
