Description

voice Collected by Gladys McChristian For Mary C. Parler Transcribed by Frances Majors Sung by Gladys McChristian Huntsville, Arkansas July 16, 1958 Reel 246, Item 1 Happy Little Nigger I'm a happy little nigger All the way from Alabam, Where I've hoed in the cotton and the cane; Oh, the white folks they'll miss me When they call for little Sam But I never expect to go back there again. Chorus: Bonnie wants to go, come on with me, The possum he is fine, very fine; Give me, oh, give me that only wish of mine, That watermelon smiling on the vine. Oh, I left my oldest brother For to take care of my mother For I'm bound to leave that fair and happy clime; Oh, the white folks they saw me And they shot me through the fence, But I didn't leave that melon on the vine. (Chorus) I left in the night When the moon was shining bright, And I didn't leave that melon on the vine.
