Deed of manumission dated December 28, 1849 by John Whalen of the Howard District of Anne Arundel County, Maryland for his Negro slave named Samuel Dorsey. The manumission is in consideration of the sum of $200. Witnessed by Justice of the Peace Walter Dorsey on December 28 and recorded by district clerk E. P. (Edwin Parsons) Hayden on December 29, the document identifies Samuel Dorsey as age 38 or 39 years and specifies his manumission take effect immediately. (Editor's note: During this time period, Howard County was known as the Howard District of Anne Arundel County. Howard County was officially designated a county in 1851.)
